The fact of the matter is, automated manufacturing is off the hook. I have always had a thing for the making of things, but a combination of advance in CNC technology and YouTube have taken this interest to the maximum. Check out a few of these videos. They are incredible.

How on earth this thing works is beyond me. Lathes- check, mills- check, what on earth this thing is- no idea. By the way the music Is God awful.

I love this thing. Just watch. Oh, and listen, I love the noises it makes.

This one goes out to anyone who has ever worked in foam. This is absolutely incredible. It is limited on the amount of forms it can do, but hey, it still blew my mind.

I now have a form set up to churn out some pretty narrow bars in addition to the wide ones.

This view shows the shape of the bars a little better. The Big bars are 24 inches wide with 16 degrees of sweep and 5 inch straight section in the middle. The Small bars are 16 wide, with 12 degrees of sweep and a 3 inch section in the middle

Dieter Rams is a German designer responsible for many of Braun's products in the second half of the twentieth century. Not only that, but Jonathon Ives, the head designer at Apple, says Rams is his major influence. No two ways Ryan Mcginness is a badass. His work definitely bridges the gap between fine art and design, and it is absolutely incredible. I was lucky enough to just stumble across his exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum the other week. It was the third time I had seen some of his work in person, and I love it every time. British stuff: Stamps commemorate Iconic British Designs.

While the idea of having stamps commemorate iconic pieces of design is nothing new, the ones for iconic British designs are just pure class.
Sidenote: After looking at these, I find it a bummer that they are redesigning the buses. Those originals are so great...why mess with perfection? It is odd being a product designer when faced with a challenge like this. The fact is, with the cost of labor, new manufacturing technologies, and new trends, the newer buses will lack the character the old ones have. They will be all ID'ed up and be corny for sure. I don't condone this type of design. If it ain't broke, and you can't make it better, leave it alone.

British stuff: British coins actually work together

The British are up to some pretty cool stuff lately. The new coins they will be releasing are awesome. I love the idea of all the coins interacting with each other to make a cohesive composition...pretty awesome.
The design was the winner of a nation-wide competition which received more than 4,000 entries. The winner was 26 year old Matthew Dent. Congrats.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are a team of brothers out of France who design absolutely amazing products. Pictured above is a room divider they designed for Kvadrat. Not only does it look amazing, but it can be free standing, and is made up of one part that is multiplied many times to get such an effect. (That is one of my favorite approaches to anything.)

I met this designer, Karl Zahn, while I was out in New York, and he happened to make wooden handlebars for his bicycle. Well it inspired me, so when I got back to Cincinnati I decided to make some wooden bike parts. So far I have made most of a fender and a pair of bars, but I have now got the jigs and tools to turn them both out relatively fast...I am psyched.

I have always loved new ways of exploiting and exploring existing manufacturing techniques. Polish designer Oskar Zieta uses hydro-forming in a a free-form manner to "inflate" these stools. The result is that every single one is slightly different. Now they may not be comfortable, and the concept may have been pushed a little further... but it is still cool nonetheless. Good job Oskar.

I saw sculpture that used ferro fluids when I was probably a junior in high school and I thought it was awesome. You may think it's awesome too. It is a solution made up of iron dust suspended in oil, and it reacts to magnetic fields in pretty crazy ways. I don't pretend to really know anything about particle physics, but I do know that the images of the Large Hadron Collider are awesome. The startup date has been pushed back a number of times, but they are now saying that they will start early experiments sometime this month. The first step is to cool the entire collider down to -456.25F! That is cold.

Art Lebedev has just released the Plastinkus Scratch Pad, for people to mess around with and pretend they are a dj. Having ridden BMX for quite some time now, I have had my fair share of stupid run-ins with cops, but this is straight up ridiculous. This happened at this month's Critical Mass in New York, and as far as anyone knows the bike rider did nothing to even deserve a verbal scolding, let alone this. People need to understand that bike riding is a good thing, and stop giving bike riders so much trouble.

I have no idea why, but there is something about a USB drive modeled after a piece of pork, or a fried chicken leg, that makes eating chicken or pork seem so much less appealling. Shameless Self Promotion: 'That's Not a Chair'

I designed the "Stoop Chair" in the summer of last year. The idea behind the chair was to design a piece that is completely open for user interpretation, and whose function is determined by the context in which it is in. I enjoy factoring humor and wit into design, as I feel a stronger attachment to products that make me smile. I personally see the "Stoop Chair" as a chair simply because I enjoy sitting on steps. Some people may see it as a commentary on suburban housing, or as a play on the phrase "porch furniture," or simply as a fun bench to sit around with your friends on. The chair is designed to be made from roto-molded polyethylene which allows for a wide range of colors, and even a marblized effect, though the prototype is made from insulation foam covered in fiberglass.

I have a relatively long line of sharp shooters in my family, but that all stopped during my mom's generation, and I have never been to keen on guns. I stumbled upon this ad today, and thought it was nuts. Quotes like "accidental discharge impossible," and "you may need one only once in your lifetime" are rather disturbing. Knock on wood, but I am hoping that I never need one.

Heatherwick Studio does does some pretty amazing stuff

Thomas Heatherwick and the Heatherwick Studio out of London have produced some pretty amazing work since they started up in 1994. Check out this sculpture designed to fill an 80 story space. The over all form was determined by pouring molten metal into water hundreds of times until they got the form they wanted. Then the form was scaled up and made out of 142,000 glass spheres suspended on 27,000 steel wires. Pretty good if I do say so myself.

Beards and Mustaches are Great

I would have come up with a better name for this but Newsweek already named the article "Pictures of Mustache Men." I assume the name is pays homage to the late 60's one hit wonder, Status Quo, and their song "Pictures of Matchstick Men."

I have been interested in/specialized in beards since I could grow one, so when I stumbled across this article I was pumped. As a matter of fact I just trimmed groomed mine up last night, and my beard is officially longer than my hair now! Anyhow, this is an article/photo gallery documenting a contest held by Bremerton, Washington's Whisker Club in preparation for the world championships.

Trust me, this is worth checking out just to see the guy's face in picture number 4.

Valcent does super neato stuff

I have been a fan of the things Valcent has been doing ever since I first heard about them. I am fascinated with their High Density Vertical Bioreactor, which they are using to grow algae which will potentially yield huge amounts of biodieself for very little money or resources. But I hadn't heard much about their High Density Vertical growth system (pictured above.) They are experimenting with growing certain types of produce in a vertical format, and have discovered that they can yield huge amounts of produce with very little land, and using far less water than used in normal agriculture.

Treehugger may call this thing pointless, but I know that I want a S'more maker. This thing is sweet. You toss the 3 essential s'more ingredients under the paddles, and this thing actually microwaves them and smashes them together. WOAH!!!

No, not really, but this is the way they should do it. Let's have a throwback Olympics with the sports of now. Maybe take those sports and give them an old world flare. I would be all about watching even the most seasoned skateboarders actually try and ride this thing.

I don't know if you all remember this, but in 2004 a woman sold a grilled cheese sandwich for $28,000 on ebay. According to her it had an image of the virgin Mary burnt into it. Apparently God was speaking to her via a George Forman Grill. She kept the thing for 10 years before selling it! Well now we have the Holy Toast bread stamp, which allows you to see the grace of the Virgin Mary every morning. I think owning one of these would actually prompt me to make my own food...scratch that. But it is one of my favorite poducts ever!

This is a patent that was issued in 2002, for pants that are designed to show off butt cleavage. Why not? Non-Newtonian fluids are one of the greatest things ever. This may sound ridiculous, but in high school some friends and I filled a baby pool with corn starch and water, (the easiest non-newtonian fluid to make) and it was pretty crazy.

Large Hadron Collider delayed yet again

The Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland was supposed to start up for the first time yesterday, and I had fully prepared myself for the collapse of the Universe...and nothing happened. They ended up delaying their search for the "Higgs" particle until August. Anyhow, check out the video because even if you don't understand any of it, (I sure don't) it still is pretty cool.
